From: DAVID WEIDE Subject: DISCOGRAPHY: Songs about MONEY (and Pledge Drive stuff!) NOTE! This discography contains ONLY material that is in my personal collection. That's cuz' I can only verify the data (album, label, number, etc. I use on my discographies) for my own collection. I know there is a TON of material out there .... that I haven't listed. That's because I don't KNOW label, album title, number ...etc on most of the suggestions that have been sent to me. Please !! No offense !!! FORMAT: Song Title - Artist / Album / Label & No. V = Vinyl LP D = CD (Var) = a compilation album of Various artists I subdivide into THREE groups: [1] Songs About MONEY [2] Songs about "Radio" (because I've found these are well-received. After all, the folks listening to the "Pledge Drive" ARE listening to RADIO, and (3) Songs in general that work well on pledge drives. Yep. I've been through 16 of them thus have some experience.

The Chicken Chokers and Horseflies were two adventurous but short-lived Boston area string bands who played new "old-time" music in the 1980s. The Chicken Chokers were variously inspired by Uncle Dave Macon, reggae, punk, and rap, even though the instruments they played were "old-time" friendly. The Horsefies were more instrumentally adroit and avant-garde in orientation. Appearing as they did in the late Reagan epoch, it's little wonder these two anomalies shone briefly and then sank without a trace. They played with music in a way that was more aligned with the spirit of the Johnson years. Chokers & Flies was a Rounder album offering some of each band, while full servings of each eccentric aggregate appear on The Chokers' Shoot Your Radio (much fun) and The Flies' darker offering, Human Fly (both on Rounder). ~ Mark A. Humphrey, All Music Guide

The words "eccentric" and "idiosyncratic" always seem to be used whenever anybody mentions Michael Hurley. Fair enough -- Hurley doesn't really swim in the mainstream. But the descriptions also imply that his music consists mainly of sophisticated novelty records, and there's a lot more to Hurley than jokes, much closer to a modern Rabelais refusing to separate humor and "real life," which may be the only way anybody could write something as sparsely lovely as "O My Stars" (and maybe one of the reasons John Fahey has been getting so much attention recently) and why someone with as limited a sense of humor as Jim O'Rourke would champion a guy who sings "I Heard the Voice of a Porkchop" and "You're Gonna Look Like a Monkey."
